An exterior door works harder than almost anything else on the house. It gets opened and closed hundreds of times a year, it carries the full weight of the weather at the one seam in the wall built to move, and it is the first thing anyone standing on the step actually looks at. Most of the door problems we get called for are not door problems at all. They are installation problems that happen to show up years later.
Why people actually replace a door
Almost every call comes down to one of three things.
- It does not seal anymore. Drafts around the frame, daylight at the edges when it is shut, or water sitting at the threshold after rain. That is weatherstripping and sill failure, and past a point it is not worth chasing with caulk.
- It does not operate anymore. Sticking on the latch side, dragging on the floor, a deadbolt that needs to be forced to throw. A door that has dropped or racked in its frame is a hinge and frame problem, not something a new lockset fixes.
- It looks tired. Faded finish, a dented steel skin, a slab that no longer matches the rest of the exterior. It is often the cheapest single upgrade that changes how the whole front of the house reads.
Material, honestly compared
All three are legitimate choices. The right one depends on the opening, the exposure and how much upkeep you want to sign up for.

For most Long Island homes, fiberglass is usually the right call. It handles coastal humidity and salt exposure without wood's maintenance, and it costs less over the life of the door than replacing a steel skin that has rusted at the bottom edge.
The install is where doors are won or lost
A good door installed badly fails early. A modest door installed correctly outperforms it for years.
- Threshold and sill pan. Water at the bottom of a door is almost always a sill pan that was never installed, not a bad door. The pan carries any water past the threshold back out and away from the framing underneath.
- Plumb and square in the opening. A door that has to be forced shut is sitting in an opening that was not set plumb and square. Get this right and the door closes on its own weight.
- Shimming at the hinges. Proper shims at each hinge point carry the door's weight so it does not sag and drop over time, which is the most common reason an older door starts dragging on the floor.
- Flashing at the head. Metal or membrane flashing above the door directs water around the opening instead of into the wall behind it.
- Air sealing with low-expansion foam. The gap around the frame gets sealed with foam made for door and window openings, not stuffed with fiberglass insulation, which does not seal air movement the same way and can bow the frame if overdone.
- Strike adjustment. The strike plate gets set so the deadbolt throws fully without lifting or binding the door. Nobody mentions this one, and it matters for security as much as it does for daily use.
Slab versus pre-hung
A slab is just the door itself, hung back into your existing frame, and it only works well when that frame is genuinely sound and square. On an older Long Island house that is often not the case after decades of settling. A pre-hung door arrives already set in its own new frame, with a new threshold and new weatherstripping, so the whole assembly gets set correctly, not just the slab. For most replacements here, we recommend pre-hung. A slab-only swap makes sense mainly when the existing frame is confirmed sound.
Storm doors, sidelights and glass
Sidelights and a transom change how much light reaches the entry, and they change how much framing work is involved, since they widen the rough opening rather than just filling it. Glass set into the door itself is a security and privacy decision as much as a light one, and there is a real range between a small decorative lite and a full-view panel.
Sliding and patio doors
Rollers and tracks are the part of a sliding door that fails, not the glass or the slab. A patio door that has to be shoved open is usually a track and roller problem, not a reason to replace the whole unit. A poorly sealed patio door threshold is also a common source of water finding its way into a back room, which comes back to the same sill pan and flashing detail that matters on any exterior door.
Door openings live in the siding, so do them together
A door opening sits inside the siding field, and the head flashing has to tuck up under the siding course above it, not just butt against it. That joint only gets detailed correctly, rather than caulked and hoped for, when the door and the siding are done as one job.

How long does a door installation take?
A single entry door, done as a pre-hung replacement, is typically a one-day job. Sidelights, a rotten or out-of-square frame, or a patio door alongside it can add time. You get a specific timeframe in the written proposal.
Can you reuse my existing hardware?
Sometimes, if it is in good condition and compatible with the new door's bore pattern. We will tell you honestly when reuse makes sense, though often it is worth replacing hardware at the same time since a worn deadbolt is usually most of the way there anyway.
Will a new door really help my heating bill?
An old door with failed weatherstripping and a gapped threshold is a real, continuous draft, and sealing that up makes a noticeable difference. It will not transform a heating bill on its own, but it removes one genuine source of heat loss.
