If water is coming in right now

Do these things while you wait for a call back, in this order.

• Move what is underneath. Furniture, electronics, anything that water damage would ruin, out from under the leak.
• Put a container down. A bucket or trash can under the drip, and check it often enough that it does not overflow.
• If the ceiling is bulging, drain it. Trapped water in a sagging ceiling is heavier than it looks and will come down on its own. A small hole at the lowest point of the bulge, made with something like a screwdriver, lets it drain into a bucket in a controlled way instead of the ceiling failing all at once.
• Photograph everything. The stain, the drip, the bulge, any water on the floor. Your insurance company and your adjuster will want it, and photos taken while it is actively happening are worth more than photos taken after it dries.
• Do not climb onto a wet roof. Not to look at it, not to tarp it yourself. This is the one that gets people hurt.

What to have ready when you call

None of this is required, but having it ready means we can get to the point faster.

• Your town, so we know the area and what the local exposure tends to look like.
• Roughly how old the roof or the windows are, even a rough guess helps.
• Where the problem shows up inside, a ceiling stain, a specific room, a draft at a window.
• Whether you already have a quote from another contractor.
• Whether insurance is involved, or you think it might be.
